World War One
The First World War affected all parts of the East Coast with various ports having a Naval presence, as well as a number of experimental naval air bases. The merchant and fishing fleets were heavily affected, with restrictions on their movements, removal of lghts, and attacks by the enemy. Many of the merchant seamen and fishermen were in the Royal Naval Reserve and were mobilised from the very start of the war, and many ships were requisitioned for war service. Those ashore were not immune either, and suffered attacks from the sea and the air.
