Introduction
A great naval leader and skilled tactician Horatio Nelson was respected and revered by his men and continues to be loved and admired by our nation. He was a man that defied the conventions of his age and on several occasions disobeyed commands and yet despite these risks he went on to become a national hero.
The great naval captain remains one of the East of England’s most famous sons and the story of his life - his battles, his love affair with Lady Emma Hamilton, his final triumph and death at the Battle of Trafalgar- have been absorbed into the popular consciousness

SHIPPING
Being the Sailors' Reading Room, Shipping is obviously the main subject of our exhibition. Among our collection we have paintings of ship wrecks such as that of the Martina Maria (January 1881) and the Elizabeth Kilner (1892)
