James Stevens No.14 Lifeboat
Walton-on-the-Naze's second Royal National Lifeboat Institution's lifeboat was James Stevens No.14. She was on station from 1900 to 1928 and rescued 227 lives. In 1905 the RNLI decided to experiment with motors in lifeboats and chose James Stevens No.14 as one of those to be converted from a pulling and sailing lifeboat to a motorised one. She returned to Thames Ironworks, the yard that built her, for motorisation and was the most successful of the prototypes.
William Hammond served Walton's RNLI station for 45 years and was coxswain from 19xx to 19xx. He was awarded a special certificate which was signed by all the crew and members of the management committee to acknowledge his long and dedicated service to lifesaving off the coast off Essex.
