Objects in the Nottage Museum.

Introduction

Having been founded as a school for mariners, the Nottage began to recieve gifts from local residents and businesses.  At first these were navigational instruments, books on navigation and seamanship, and the ship half models which had been used by local shipyards.  Later other items of maritime or local interest were acquired.

As this collection grew, the donations placed on display gradually took on the form of a small museum.  This museum is now open to the public during the Summer months when the classes are in reccess.

The Boatbuilding Workshop.

During the Summer when there are no classes being held in the upstairs rooms, the Nottage is open as a museum.  However the ground floor is a workshop where the boatbuilding classes are held, and as it takes a student at least three years to complete his 'coursework', the uncompleted boats remain in the workshop.

Visitors to the museum can therefore see the small Nottage Dinghies at various stages of construction.  This is very interesting, but we would remind you that they are not museum exhibits but belong to the students building them, and request that you do not touch them and that for your own safety you do not enter the working area.

Also on the ground floor is a display of old shipwrights' tools, some half models, and some photographs from the shipyards.
