Introduction
The Museum of The Broads Site
The Museum of The Broads Physical Site
Formerly used as a warehouse for goods transported on "Wherries", the small addition on the right was a shop selling essentials to the Wherry men.
A "Wherry" is a sailing barge designed for transporting goods around the waterways of "the Broads". Mostly to/from Great Yarmouth loading from sea-going ships to/from village or town staithes. They could carry up to 30 tons against the 1 ton on a horse drawn cart over appalling roads (even worse in winter)
This view shows "Our Boys" floating grocery and general store, and the end of the covered "Friend's Way" with the stern of the "Commissioner's Launch"
The Commissioners Launches were the "Traffic Wardens" of The Broads waterways. They supervised speed limits and excessive wash creation, but also provided all sorts of help from First Aid to directions to lost boaters.
There is a play boat for younger visitors to clamber over and live out their "Coot Club" fantasies.
The Reception and shop now has a Tearoom area for light refreshments.
The Wherry Room is part of the reception area, and contains a reconstruction of a Wherry Cuddy with a commentary by boatmen,do not disturb the cat!
In the Boat Shed is Maria a "Lateener" built in 1827 and the fastest racing yacht on the broads in the 19th. century.
On the right are an "Airborne Lifeboat" as dropped from Lancaster bombers to ditched airmen, and a Norfolk Punt.
Also in the boat shed are displays of tools used in boat building.
