Introduction
These pages are an introduction to a few of the themes and items that are currently on display at Felixstowe Museum.
Our maritime displays deal with the Royal and Merchant Navies but specifically with HMS Beehive, East coast paddle steamers, Felixstowe Experimental Seaplane Establishment the developement of the Port of Felixstowe and local maritime history.

This is a Harwich Harbour Board Jetty and as far as we know not used by Coastal Forces. We do not know if it was featured in the film 'The Sea Shall Not have Them'. There were two other jetties up river of this pier, one being the aggregates jetty the other the submarine mining jetty used for harbour defence in the 19 century, only the piles remain now of the latter. The Air Sea Reacue Launch at Woodbridge was not based in Felixstowe but in Malta.Felixstowe Museum Felixstowe Museum

HMS Beehive
HMS BEEHIVE
HMS Beehive was a Royal Naval Coastal Forces Base Commissioned 1 July 1940 and headquartered at Felixstowe Dock in what was the Little Ships Hotel.
Throughout the war the base was host to Motor Torpedo Boats, Motor Gun Boats and Motor Launches.
These vessels saw action in the North Sea off the Dutch, German and French coasts throughout hostilities. In May 1945 they took surrender of German E Boats operating in the area.
The base closed on 1st July 1945

With the closing down of HMS Beehive at Felixstowe ML442 was decommissioned on the Medway and put up for sale in Oct 1945

Having lived in Felixstowe for some time ... there is still an old wodden jetty which is located at the end of the beach/beginning oif the dock area which I suspect was used by these boats .... was it featured in "The sea shall not have them?" Also at Woodbridge there are one or two rescue lauches - one still has its RAF markings and is in good condition - could these have been stationed at Felixstowe?N.Chettleburgh Felixstowe
