The 2016 Nottage Exhibition: Oysters.
This Exhibition will run from 2nd July until 29th August.
The Colchester Native Oysters have been prized for their excellence for centuries. The Romans were very fond of them even before they invaded Britain. Over the years the Industry has declined or prospered, as a victim or benificiary of changes in climate, weather, economics and fashion. The oysters themselves have sometimes suffered from diseases, or the changing fortunes of their predators. This Exibition is their story, and the story of the men who caught them and tended them in their beds.
We are very lucky to have been loaned for copying a set of programmes from the renowned Colchester Oyster Feast from the late 19th centuary until just before W.W.2, and to have had access to the photo archive of the Mersea Museum.
