Lowestoft Shipbuilding

Introduction

In the period 1900-1993 the Lowestoft ship building and repair yards were major employers.
In the 1950's including sub contractors, the workforce  exceeded one thousand
The port's two leading yards were Richards Shipbuilders and Brooke Marine Ltd., who
between them built many hundreds of steel vessels, including Naval craft.
The following sequence of photos showing the building of a typical steel vessel,
has been prepared on behalf of the Lowestoft Maritime Museum by Brooke Archives.
The "Bolton Abbey" was the first of a pair (Yard Nos.261 & 262) of 303ft 2700 tons
passenger/cargo vessels built for Associated Humber Lines Ltd. of Hull and was
completed in May 1958.
