Introduction
Sailors used rope to make both practical and decorative items. They would also have special tools to help them with their work.

Old rope was broken down into rope yarns, these yarns would then be either used on their own or perhaps plaited into sennit which then was woven, stitched or knitted into mats that could be used as chafe protection on board ship but also would be used as door mats . Many seafarers made such mats and bought them home.
