The Origins of the Nottage

Introduction

Captain Charles Nottage was one of those wealthy, well connected, energetic Victorian gentlemen who seemed to have been everywhere and done everything.  The family, which had settled in Essex, originally hailed from Nottage in Glamorganshire, from where they derived their surname.  He was the only son of Alderman George Swan Nottage, who was chief magistrate London, and Mrs Christiana Nottage.  His father suffered the misfortune to be the first Lord Mayor of London for well over a hundred years to die in office.
