Great Yarmouth Sailors' Home
Index
Introduction
The Sailors Home was founded in 1861 and in its one hundred year history cared for more than 11000 shipwrecked sailors. They were given accommodation, food and basic medical care, sometimes having been through terrible ordeals.

Wardens of the Sailors' Home
After Simon Harcourt there were a succession of people held in high esteem by those that stayed in the Home for their devotion and championing of the sailor's cause.
George Watson was secretary from 1860 to 1908 and raised much financial capital for the Home. Mary and Herbert Bracey and their daughters managed the Sailors' Home from 1908 until 1928. H.A. Pertwee then managed the Home assisted by his wife, and his daughter Nesta Pertwee then took over the management of the Home until its closure on 1st January 1965.
Nesta Pertwee had many years nursing experience acted as local agent for the Shipwrecked Mariners Society. She was probably the most fondly remembered warden of all and oversaw several parties for the shipwrecked sailors. Her tenure saw the busiest period that the Home was ever to see, during the Second World War.
Miss Pertwee was assisted by Victor Hennison who was the caretaker. He had been a fisherman and was caretaker at the Mission to Seamen in the town. When it was blitzed, he and his wife were injured and then went to the Sailors' Home where they helped for 10 years. Henry Sandell was the odd job man and a retired master of the Corton and St Nicholas lightvessels stationed off the coast of Great Yarmouth. He was a great host and tale teller.
