Wreck of the James & Eleanor

Contributed by peter hancock

A painting of a shipwreck

Ernie Childs' dynamic painting shows the attempted rescue of the brig James and Eleanor by the Alfred Corry lifeboat during a January gale in 1895. The vessel was reduced to matchwood in the space of two hours by the force of the waves and three of her seven crew were drowned. (Submitted by Peter Hancock for consideration by Editor P Johnson as possible replacement for the existing websit5e images)

My gt. gt. grandfather James Mallett born in Blakeney in 1830 was drowned in November 1864. while sailing on this vessel probably somewhere en route to the Baltic. Another member of the crew was also drowned. The weather at that time was very stormy according to newspaper reports. James left a widow and 4 children back home in Blyth, Northumberland. I have a photo of James taken in the 1850's or 60's. I am thrilled to discover this painting on your website.
