Boatman rescuing woman and child

 The mother has tied her child to herself. Her limp and pale appearance suggests she has fainted whilst being rescued in the breeches buoy.

These fanciful images were extremely popular in the Victorian period and filled the pages of publications such as the London Illustrated Magazine.
