EXCELSIOR under full sail
Contributed by Excelsior Trust
EXCELSIOR under full sail consisting of Jib, Jib topsail, Foresail (smacksman term), Mainsail, Main topsail, Mizzen sail, Mizzen Topsail.
This is the start of the London Hamburg leg of the 1989 Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race. In the background is GRATITUDE, another former Lowestoft smack owned in Sweden.
EXCELSIOR has just had a brief refit following a non-stop trip around the mainland of Britain undertaken as a proving voyage in this, her first year of operation. Owing to persistant headwinds she had to take a short-cut through the Caledonian Canal in order to be able to represent Lowestoft in this prestigeous race.
EXCELSIOR finally came 4th in her class and 13th overall.
