Bellrope made by Corstaal(Chris) Berghout of London
1000mm long made by Corstaal(Chris) Berghout of London using nylon cord ,with a metal eye then finished with varnish. He made it onboard the Sand dredger Bowfleet in 1977,and won a prize at Marine Society handicraft competition. Chris Berghout was a Dutch merchant seaman on board a ship sunk of the South Coast of England at the beginning of the world war II, he never returned to Holland to live, but lived and worked on British ships, when not at sea he was a ship keeper or lived in seaman’s missions, latterly in east London.
