A yacht in trouble.

A yacht in trouble.

Not all pierhead paintings were of pristine ships on sunlit waters.  This one shows the schooner yacht Vanadis in stormy seas after losing her fore topmast.  The waves were probably one of the pre-painted backgrounds and the damage reconstructed by the artist from the crew's reports and by observing the state of the vessel on her arrival.
